In recent weeks, three Kiwi women have produced performances that are among the best this nation has ever recorded. What’s more, they have done so in major sports rather than the fringe or minor sports we are accustomed to succeeding in.

Lisa Carrington, the sprint paddler from Ohope, won her 5th World Championship title in the K1 200m in Milan after taking out the K1 500m earlier in the event.

Lydia Ko won the Canadian Open, the 3rd time she has done so, while Lauren Boyle increased her World Championship medal haul to five after taking out two silver medals in the 800 and 1500m freestyle events in Kazan Russia.

To the average New Zealander, winning another medal or world championship title isn’t out of the ordinary. However, to those who understand sport and in particular, the difference between the size of sports, what Carrington, Ko and Boyle have produced is nothing short of spectacular.

Although we may not know it, we have just witnessed one of the most impressive runs in New Zealand sporting history.
